NAV 2009 - what's new?
The 2009 release of Microsoft Dynamics NAV has some useful
improvements to the software while retaining the features that
makes NAV so popular with its 1 million worldwide users.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 retains all the key functionality - enabling
financial management, manufacturing operations, supply chain
management, sales and marketing campaigns, human resource
management, project management and customer service management.
It remains simple to customise and users can produce reports
easily. The software also retains the visual and functional
similarities with Microsoft Office products, as well as tighter
Office integration.
What are the main improvements?
One major improvement is the choice of the classic or new
‘role tailored’ client. Role tailored functionality ensures
users see only the options and information they need to see
on-screen, hiding the 90% they don’t need. Users can implement
one of the 20+ ‘out-of-the-box’ roles or create their own.
Another improvement is the ability to integrate data and
business logic from NAV with a range of other
applications, using .NET Web Services functionality.
The third main improvement is in the database layer - NAV
2009 makes better use of the features in Microsoft SQL Server,
well known for its reliability and flexibility. NAV 2009 allows users
to analyse data and create insightful reports more easily and,
through the role tailored client, can harness the power of
reporting services.
Since enhancements (i.e. upgrades) are typically
included in customers’ support packages, we recommend upgrading
NAV on a reasonably regular basis, other business priorities permitting.
This allows you to take advantage of new features and improved
business processes. Delay your upgrade for too long and your end users may
have to take on board a large number of changes all in one go,
which can be disruptive.
